Moving in the Fall? Here’s What You Need to Know

moving in the fall

The process of moving, at any time of year, can be both exciting and stressful. Moving in the fall offers its own unique benefits and challenges. Many have found that moving in the fall offers a smoother transition than other seasons. As professional movers, we would like to share with you some advantages and disadvantages of moving in the fall.

Advantages OF MOVING IN THE FALL:

1. The weather is typically nice

If you decide to move during summer, you will likely have to deal with high temperatures and humidity. In other words, you will sweat a lot as you load and unload your belongings. On the other hand, winter weather conditions can make moving cold, miserable, and even dangerous.

The fall is a good time to move because you avoid extremes of hot or cold. Autumn temperatures are generally pleasant, and you likely will not have to worry about snowy or icy driving conditions.

2. Professional movers may have lower rates

Summer is usually the peak season for moving. Since autumn comes after peak season, you may be able to get a better deal when hiring a moving company.

3. Professional movers have more available dates

Another advantage of moving during the autumn is that the professional moving company will be in a better position to accommodate your moving dates, since their calendar is likely not as full.

Disadvantages:

1. It may be harder to sell your home

If you have not sold your home yet, then fall may be a tough time of the year to get a buyer to close on it. Although, we must admit that in the current market, this might not be too much of an issue.

2. It may be hard to “settle into” a new home right before the holidays

Many people are consumed by the holidays, either on a personal or a business level. Relocating to a new place can be stressful at any time but may be doubly so right before the most hectic time of the year (at least for many individuals). In addition, if you have children, you’ll have to really coordinate the move so that they can transition into a new environment with minimum stress — and autumn may not be the best time to make that happen.

3. The weather may be unpredictable

Fall weather is generally pleasant, and free of extremes in temperature or humidity. However, there is still an element of unpredictability regarding autumn weather patterns. For instance, if you are relocating to or from a northern climate, there is always the possibility that an unexpected snowstorm will hit at the end of fall — perhaps in November, or even October! There is also the chance that you will have to deal with a sudden heat wave, or abrupt drops in temperature.

Of course, whether you decide to move in the fall or not, you should always consider enlisting the help of professional movers to make your transition as seamless as possible.
