Post-Move Advice: Your First Night Survival Guide

The first night after your big move can be tough! After lots of hard work and planning your move, the movers have left and all you really want to do is get settled into your new home. But your stuff is still all packed up on the movers truck! A little planning can go a long way in making your first night in your new home a bit easier. When planning for your first night after you have arrived at your new home, be sure to pack both the practical and the comforting in your ‘first night’ boxes. Here are some for ideas for surviving that first night in style and comfort.

After your long distance movers have left, it is important that you have all of the necessities in place. A list of essential items you will need on your first night includes toilet paper, tissues, toothpaste and toothbrushes and other personal toiletries. Don’t forget other items such as towels, pajamas and clothes for a few days. Remember, it will take some time to unpack all of your belongings. Also, snacks are always a good idea, especially if you have children.

Be sure to have phone and tablet chargers on hand. These are essential and can often be forgotten in the chaos of moving day. It is always a good idea to pack these in your “Open First” or “First Night” boxes. When planning for your first night post-move, consider what will make you feel more comfortable. Sitting or sleeping on the floor is never fun. Consider buying a self-inflating air mattress to ride out the nights before the moving truck arrives. A good trick is to make your new house feel like home, instantly! Maybe that’s playing your favorite music, sitting down to a favorite family game or watching a movie. Whatever it takes, make that happen!

Perhaps the most important key to surviving your first night and days until your movers arrive is remembering that it’s temporary. Since you have a delivery window rather than a delivery date, and your family will likely be without all of your belongings for more than one night. Pack enough to get you through the first week and remember that if there are items you forgot, you can make a run to the store.
